BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Master print published by Jean, Paris in c. 1775.. Our definition of master print is: a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters. Artists and Engravers: Engraved by P. Chenu after A. van den Velde.
Biography engraver: Pierre Chenu (1730-1795) was a French engraver/etcher, student of Francois Cars and J.P. le Bas.
Biography artist: Adriaen van de Velde (1636-1672) was a Dutch animal and landscape painter. Although his father and brother (Willem the Elder and Younger) were both maritime painters, Adriaen wished to become a landscape painter. He trained in the studio of Jan Wynants, and was a friend of Philip Wouwerman.
