Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, creasing and soiling. A few wrmholes in left margin. Tear at left margin, backed. Tear at bottom middle. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Plate 1 from The Story of Jonah, engraved and published by Philips Galle after a design by Maarten van Heemskerck.

Reference: H. 55-58; New Hollstein (Heemskerck) 179; New Hollstein (Galle) 75.

Biography engraver: Philips Galle (1537-1612), prominent Antwerp engraver and publisher. A key figure in the print trade, known for religious and allegorical subjects after prominent Northern artists.

Biography artist: Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), Dutch Mannerist painter and draftsman. Trained in Haarlem, he traveled to Italy and returned with a style influenced by the antique and Raphael.
