Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: small coat of arms with french lily.

Sheet size: 33 x 26 cm (12.99 x 10.24 inch). Image size: 24.5 x 20.7 cm. (9.65 x 8.15 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Light foxing, creasing and soiling. Remains of paper on rear from previous carrier. Thin paper spot. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Plate 3 from The Story of Jonah, engraved and published by Philips Galle after a design by Maarten van Heemskerck.

Reference: H. 55-58; New Hollstein (Van Heemskerck) 180; New Hollstein (Galle) 76.

Biography engraver: Philips Galle (1537-1612), prominent Antwerp engraver and publisher. A key figure in the print trade, known for religious and allegorical subjects after prominent Northern artists.

Biography artist: Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), Dutch Mannerist painter and draftsman. Trained in Haarlem, he traveled to Italy and returned with a style influenced by the antique and Raphael.
