The Lutheran clergyman wears clerical robes and a large ruff collar while resting his hand on a book marked ‘B S,’ with additional volumes and a symbolic emblem below the frame. Johann Christian Stemler (1701-1756) was a German Lutheran theologian and church official associated with Leipzig. He served as pastor of the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) and held the office of superintendent within the Leipzig diocese. Stemler was also a professor of theology and assessor of the ecclesiastical consistory, participating in church administration and theological education during the mid-eighteenth century. His career placed him among the learned Lutheran clergy connected to Leipzig’s university and church institutions.

Biography engraver: Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) was a German engraver, mezzotint specialist, publisher, and art dealer active in Augsburg. He was among the most important German practitioners of mezzotint in the eighteenth century. Haid produced numerous portraits of European nobility, scholars, clergy, and officials, often after paintings by contemporary artists. Through his publishing house he distributed portrait prints widely across the German states, contributing significantly to the popularity of mezzotint portraiture in Central Europe.
