– Half-length portrait of Carolus Franciscus Budeus shown within an architectural niche resembling a sculptural window frame. The sitter wears an elaborately embroidered eighteenth-century coat and wig, gesturing with one hand while leaning slightly forward on a ledge. Beneath the portrait is a cartouche with coat of arms and Latin inscription. Carolus Franciscus Budeus (Karl Franz Budeus, born March 1695 in Halle an der Saale) was a German jurist and government official. He served as Cancellarius vicarius (vice chancellor) at the ducal court of Saxe-Gotha, participating in the administrative and legal affairs of the Ernestine duchies. Educated in law, he belonged to the learned bureaucratic elite typical of the German princely courts of the eighteenth century, where trained jurists played a central role in governance and state administration.

Biography engraver: Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) was a German engraver, mezzotint specialist, publisher, and art dealer active in Augsburg. He was among the most important German practitioners of mezzotint in the eighteenth century. Haid produced numerous portraits of European nobility, scholars, clergy, and officials, often after paintings by contemporary artists. Through his publishing house he distributed portrait prints widely across the German states, contributing significantly to the popularity of mezzotint portraiture in Central Europe.

Biography artist: The painter identified on the plate simply as ‘Bach’ remains somewhat uncertain. The name likely refers to an eighteenth-century German portrait painter.
