Medium: Etching / engraving on handlaid (verge) paper.

Condition: good, given age. Brownish edges. Creases. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This attractive print originates from: “Paradigmata Graphics Variorum Artificum”, published in Amsterdam by Nicolas Visscher, 1671.

Biography engraver: Jan de Bisschop (ca. 1628-1671) engraver of the Dutch school. Bisschop had a law practice in the Hague where he also founded an art school and a publishing house. His influential circle of friends included the mathematician and philosopher Rene Descartes and the artist Constantijn Huygens.

All original engravings bear the monogram “JE” , which denotes “Jan Episcopius, “Epicopius” being the Latinzation of his name which is ‘Bishop’ in English.

Biography artist: Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475?1564) was an Italian painter, sculpturer, architect and poet. This print was also after Jacob Matham (15 October 1571 ? 20 January 1631), of Haarlem, who was an engraver and pen-draftsman. .
