– Fine engraved portrait of Jean Loret, shown half-length and turned slightly toward the viewer. He wears a clerical cap and formal collar, with richly engraved textures in the garments and hair. The portrait is set within a large oval frame surrounded by dense horizontal background lines. Beneath the portrait a cartouche contains a poetic inscription referring to the reputation of Loret’s writings. Jean Loret (1610–1665) was a French journalist and writer best known for his weekly verse newsletters, the Muse historique, which reported court and political news in poetic form.

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 25 x 32 cm (9.84 x 12.6 inch). Image size: 22 x 27 cm. (8.66 x 10.63 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, soiling and creases. Trimmed, as common. Remains of paper tape on rear from previous attachment. Some thin paper spots. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Biography engraver: Robert Nanteuil (1623-1678) was a celebrated French portrait engraver and draughtsman, active in Paris. He was known for his finely detailed and lifelike engravings, particularly of French nobility and clergy. Appointed official portrait engraver to Louis XIV in 1657.
