‘”H. VAN BRUSSEL. PICTOR”‘

– Small oval portrait of Hermanus van Brussel, shown bust-length and turned slightly to the left, dressed in early nineteenth-century coat and cravat. The portrait is set within a simple oval and printed with wide margins on laid paper. Hermanus van Brussel (1763-1815) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and etcher, especially known for landscapes, river views and topographical scenes. This portrait print was made in 1815 by Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar after a design by Wijbrand Hendriks, to accompany the 1815 edition of Van Brussel’s etchings. Bagelaar was a Dutch etcher and amateur artist with a particular interest in printmaking, while Hendriks was a prolific Haarlem painter and curator of Teylers Museum.
