Description
Depicts a dramatic classical scene of a Gaul killing his wife before committing suicide, known as the “Ludovisi Group.” The male figure holds a sword raised, with his wife collapsing beside him.

Medium: Etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 18.1 x 24.2 cm (7.13 x 9.53 inch). Image size: 17.9 x 22.2 cm. (7.05 x 8.74 inch).
Condition: good, given age. A few smal tear in the paper edges. Remain of glue in top right corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From: ‘Signorum veterum icones’ by Jan de Bisschop (Joh. Episcopius ), published in 1668. It is a collection of Roman statues / sculptures of Roman gods, emperors, mythological figures, fauns etc. The plates in this work are engraved after his own drawings or after the drawings of Doncker, De Geyn, Dondyns, Matham, Ferreris and others.
Biography engraver: Jan de Bisschop (1628-1671) was a Dutch Golden Age artist, lawyer, and art collector. He is known for his etchings of classical statues and ancient art, aiming to educate fellow artists about classical forms and aesthetics. His series Signorum veterum icones was influential in promoting classical art in the Netherlands.
