‘AROUND OVAL: ‘MEDIIS TRANQUILLUS IN UNDIS.’ LOWER TEXT: ‘FRIDERICUS HENRICUS COMES PALATINUS RHENI, DUX BAVARIAE, DESIGNATUS REX BOHEMIAE?’ SIGNED IN PLATE: ‘MICHIELE JOH. MIEREVELT AD VIVUM DELINEAVIT’ AND ‘GUILHELMO JAC. DELPHIO SCULPSIT.”

– Oval portrait of Frederick Henry of the Palatinate shown as a young nobleman wearing a richly decorated doublet and a large pleated ruff. The sitter is depicted with calm dignity and looks directly toward the viewer. The portrait is set within an oval frame bearing the motto ‘Mediis tranquillus in undis’ (‘Calm in the midst of the waves’). Frederick Henry (1614-1629) was the son of Frederick V, Elector Palatine–known as the ‘Winter King’ of Bohemia–and Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of King James I of England.

Biography engraver: Willem Jacobsz. Delff (1580-1638) was a Dutch engraver from Delft and one of the leading portrait engravers of the Dutch Golden Age. He frequently worked after paintings by Michiel van Mierevelt, translating these portraits into finely detailed engravings that circulated widely throughout Europe.

Biography artist: Michiel van Mierevelt (1566-1641) was one of the most prominent portrait painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Based in Delft, he painted portraits of many leading political and intellectual figures of the Dutch Republic and European nobility. His works were often reproduced in engravings by artists such as Willem Jacobsz. Delff.
