Antique print, titled: ‘Second stage of cruelty’, Several emblems of animal cruelty. A driver beats his fallen horse with a cudgel. A man beats a lamb to death with a stick. A man with a cart loaded with barrels runs over a boy. Two men seated on a donkey (one carrying a heavy chest), beat their mount into action. Artists and Engravers: Made by T. Cook after W. Hogarth. Thomas Cook (1744-1818) was a London engraver. Thomas was a student of Ravenet, the well-known French engraver who resided in London at the time. He has copied the entire engraved work of Hogarth, which was published under the name ‘Hogarth Restored’ from 1806. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English painter, printmaker, social critic and cartoonist.
Condition: Excellent, given age. Ample margins. A small stain in the right margin. Clean and crisp impression. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
