HOLBEIN, NAIWINCX, ROMANTIC ETCHING, MOUNTAINOUS RIVER LANDSCAPE, 19TH CENTURY, DUTCH AFTERWORK, EARLY SIGNATURE | PCO-C49-16
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Early signed etching by Therese Holbein (full signature: Th. de Holbein dapres Naiwincx), after a landscape composition by Dutch Golden Age artist Herman Naiwincx from 1812-1813, early ed. before Holbein abbreviated her signature.
Biography engraver: Therese Holbein von Holbeinsberg (c.1785-1859) was an Austrian female landscape painter and etcher. A descendant of the Holbein family, she lived in Graz and later in Vienna. Known for her romantic, atmospheric depictions of natural scenes, she worked primarily in oil, watercolor, and etching. Most of her work remained private during her lifetime, but she produced a notable group of landscape etchings around 1812-1813, often drawing inspiration from Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Everdingen.
Biography artist: Herman Naiwincx (1623-1670) was a Dutch Golden Age landscape painter and printmaker. Active in Amsterdam and Schoonhoven, he was known for his Italianate landscapes, dramatic topography, and architectural scenes. Naiwincx also collaborated with artists such as Willem Schellinks. His etchings reflect a strong sense of spatial drama and atmospheric perspective.
