‘DIEN BOOSKOP UIJT HET KOT GEKROPEN VAN EEN VERCKEN / SLAET OMGECOCHT ALS DOL MET SLEUTELS VAN DE KERKEN.”

– Satirical circular portrait of Christoph Bernhard von Galen, Prince-Bishop of M?nster, shown in profile wearing episcopal headgear decorated with fleur-de-lis. The image is designed as a reversible ‘double head’: when turned upside down the bishop’s portrait transforms into the head of a pig. The satirical imagery reflects Dutch propaganda during the Rampjaar (Disaster Year) of 1672, when the Dutch Republic was invaded by France and its allies, including the Bishop of M?nster. The pig imagery mocks the bishop, who was nicknamed ‘Bommen Berend’ for his bombardment of Dutch cities during the conflict.
