‘NIET ALS EEN KARL VALT HY KEERELS OP DE HUYT. / MAER ALS EEN TYGER WIE VERBONDEN BREECKT OM HUYT.’ (LETTERING AROUND THE CIRCULAR PORTRAIT).’

– Satirical portrait of King Charles II of England shown in bust within a circular frame. The portrait can be inverted to reveal the head of a tiger, symbolizing treachery or predatory aggression. Around the bust appear allegorical elements including theatrical masks joined by a chain with fleurs-de-lis, and emblems such as the English rose and Irish harp which appear threatened by the tiger. The print was produced during the Dutch ‘Rampjaar’ (Disaster Year) of 1672, when the Dutch Republic was attacked by France and England. The image criticizes Charles II for his alliance with France during the Third Anglo-Dutch War.
