Medium: Copper engraving, original hand-colored on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 48 x 55.2 cm (18.9 x 21.73 inch). Image size: 50 x 57.5 cm. (19.69 x 22.64 inch).

Condition: very good, given age. Original travel map mount on linnen and attached to a rigid carrier sheet. Light soiling. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

“Atlas Universel” by Robert de Vaugondy, published in Paris, 1757. Gilles & Didier Robert de Vaugondy were French cartographers active in the mid-18th century, known for their detailed atlas maps and ornate cartouches. Their “Atlas Universel” (1757) is one of the most respected works in 18th-century cartography.

Biography engraver: Jean Baptiste Henri Delahaye (18th century, Paris) was a French engraver and cartographer in Paris, and a brother of Guillaume-Nicolas Delahaye. Signed as Delahaye l’aine.
