Map : ‘Les Estats de l’Empire des Turqs en Asie.’ Rare map of the region from Turkey to the Caucasus, and from the Nile Delta to the Persian Gulf. With Cyprus and Crete. The map is filled with cities, topography and is adorned with a decorative title cartouche.
Made by an anonymous engraver after Sanson.
Medium: engraving / etching with outline hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 58 x 43 cm (22.83 x 16.93 inch). Image size: 51 x 40 cm. (20.08 x 15.75 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Original fold. Some small tears in the margins, not affecting image. Paper separation upper middle fold, backed. Paper loss top left and right margin, backed by hand laid paper. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Original antique map by Nicholas Sanson, published ca. 1650.
Biography artist: Nicholas Sanson (1600 – 1667) and his descendents were important French cartographer’s active through the 17th century. Sanson started his career as a historian where, it is said, he turned to cartography as a way to illustrate his historical studies. In the course of his research some of his fine maps came to the attention of King Louis XIII who, admiring the quality of his work, appointed Sanson ‘Geographe Ordinaire du Roi’. Sanson’s duties in this coved position included advising the King on matters of Geography and compiling the royal cartographic archive. Sanson’s corpus of some three hundred maps initiated the golden age of French Cartography.
