Globe Gore of the Arabian Sea from Goa … Originally engraved to be pasted onto a globe in 1688. It shows the Arabian Sea from Oman to Sri Lanka, with a roundel with a text describing how to sail from Goa to Madagascar and the Cape of Good Hope. Under the map and on verso is an Italian text. Rare.

Medium: engraving on a sheet with letter press on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 36.5 x 49 cm (14.37 x 19.29 inch). Image size: 30 x 28 cm. (11.81 x 11.02 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Some restorations in the margins and below, not affecting map. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Original antique map by Coronelli published in: ‘Isolario Dell’Atlante Vento.’ by P. Coronelli.’ published in Venice 1690.
Biography engraver: Vincenzo Maria (Padre) Coronelli (1650-1718): Father Corronelli was a Franciscan priest, who spend most of his life in Venice. He was a noted theologian and was appointed as Father General of his order in 1699. At that time he was already famous as a mathematician, cartographer and globe maker. He was very infuential, compiled and engraved over 500 maps. His most well known work is the 2-volume ‘Atlante Veneto’ but is is equally well known for his very large terrestrial and celestial globes. One, 15 feet in diameter he made for Louis XIV of France.
