Description
This print shows a map of the province of Holland, one out of 7, which nowadays includes North and South-Holland, parts of Utrecht, Zeeland and Brabant. In the upper right corner we see mermaids holding the coat of arms of Holland with its standing lion.

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 60 x 50.2 cm (23.62 x 19.76 inch). Image size: 56.5 x 46.5 cm. (22.24 x 18.31 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Brownish. Some holes in plate below and middle been restored. Remains of paper tape in mairgin on reverse. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This attractive print was published by Claes Jansz Visscher (1587-1652) in ‘Cum Privilegio. Ordin: General Belgii Toederati.’ The first edition was published in 1652. Later versions, amongst this one, followed.
Biography engraver: Balthasar Florisz van Berckenrode (1591-1644) was a Dutch engraver and cartographer.
