The Anderloon Forest is to the southwest and Thuringia is to the east. Filled with scores of villages, forests, mountains and rivers. The map is embellished with two cartouches.

Medium: engraving / etching with original old hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 60 x 51 cm (23.62 x 20.08 inch). Image size: 56 x 43.5 cm. (22.05 x 17.13 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Paper separation lower middle fold and vertical creases / folds near middle fold reinforced on verso. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This antique map was published ca. 1650.

Biography engraver: Salomon Savery (1594 – 1683) was an engraver from the Northern Netherlands.

Biography artist: Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson was born 1588 in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death in 1664, his heirs still have published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk.
