Map: ‘Hassia Landgraviatus.’ Very decorative map of the Hesse-Kassel region is centered on Kassel and shows a large amount of detail on a scale of about one German mile per inch. The Anderloon Forest is to the southwest and Thuringia is to the east. Filled with scores of villages, forests, mountains and rivers. The map is embellished with two cartouches.

Medium: engraving / etching with original old hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 60 x 51 cm (23.62 x 20.08 inch). Image size: 56 x 43.5 cm. (22.05 x 17.13 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Paper separation lower middle fold and vertical creases / folds near middle fold reinforced on verso. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

This antique map was published ca. 1650.
Biography engraver: Salomon Savery (1594 – 1683) was an engraver from the Northern Netherlands.
Biography artist: Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson was born 1588 in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius add issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death in 1664, his heirs still have published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk.
