Map : ‘Partie Orientale du Palatinat et Eslectorat du Rhein. Les Evesches de Spire, de Wormes et le Comte de Linange.’. (Map of the Electorate of the Rhine, the Bisdom of Spire, Worms and the Duke of Linange.) Originally hand coloured (outline) copper engraved map of the eastern Rheinpfalz, the immediate area around Heidelberg and Mannheim, reaching to Kaiserslautern, Gernsheim, Heilbronn and Karlsruhe. Decorative title and scale cartouches. This map is an original map after the Carthographer N. Sanson, published in Paris by H. Jaillot ca. 1674 as part of the ‘Atlas Nouveau’.Artists and Engravers: Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712), was a French cartographer. He joined the Sanson heirs and redrew Nicolas Sanson’s maps on a larger scale. Nicholas Sanson (1600 – 1667) and his descendents were important French cartographer’s active through the 17th century. Sanson started his career as a historian where, it is said, he turned to cartography as a way to illustrate his historical studies. In the course of his research some of his fine maps came to the attention of King Louis XIII who, admiring the quality of his work, appointed Sanson ‘Geographe Ordinaire du Roi’. Sanson’s duties in this coved position included advising the King on matters of Geography and compiling the royal cartographic archive. Sanson’s corpus of some three hundred maps initiated the golden age of French Cartography.

Condition: Excellent. general age related toning. some light staining from handling.
