BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Based on La retraite de Russie by Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet, created in 1822.

Reference: Lexicon Nederlandse beeldende kunstenaars, 1750-1880, p. 92.

Biography engraver: Johannes Franciscus Paul Chantal (1821-1863), Dutch artist known for historical and portrait works. Son of Antoine Jean Louis Chantal and brother of Jean Adelin Louis “Louis” Chantal.

Biography artist: Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet (1792-1845) was a French painter and printmaker, more especially of military subjects.
