2 Antique drawings, titled: ”Een koning liep een stil alleen…” – (”A king once walked, silent and alone”). Two sheets, one with calligraphed text, the other with a watercolour of the king leaning on his sword at the edge of a lake in the forest. The story is about a king who goes swimming, while wearing his clothes and ermine cloak. No one witnesses his drowning. The moral is contiained in the two last lines: “Een koningskleed soms wel fijn maar / veel te zwaar om alleen te zijn…” (A king”s clothes sometimes nice but / much to heavy to carry alone). The text is written in black ink, with a decorated initial E (the decorations in watercolour and ink). Some further decoration along the lower edges of the text. The watercolour is made on a separate sheet of card, mounted on the larger sheet. Given the nature of these sheets and the designs on them, we assume this is a design for a publication. We have so far been unable to further trace this work. Provenance: From a private collection. Further provenance unknown.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Roel Monster (?)’ after own design. Roel Monster (1956-) is a Dutch graphic artist. He graduated from St. Joost art academy in Breda in 1979.
Condition: Good, given age. Binding holes (with the original string) in a margin of each sheet. Some small stains in the margins. A pencil annotation in the lower margin of each sheet. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
