Antique print, titled: ‘XVIIIe Siecle, France – Regne de Louis XVI’. It shows portrait of a man in 18th century French costume, with a hat in the one hand and another (fur) hat (?) in the other hand. This scarse attractive original old antique print / plate originates from: ‘Costumes Historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles.’ by Georges Duplessis, published in Paris, 1867. In 1827 Camille Bonnard began a monumental gallery of 13th to 15th century European costumes, published in 75 parts over the next two years, with beautiful hand-colored plates by Paul Mercuri. This work is the continuation of Bonnard’s work from the 16th to 18th centuries by Georges Duplessis, curator at the Paris Cabinet des �stampes. The complete work contains 150 splendid plates of apparel worn by nobility, knights, soldiers, the bourgeois, ecclesiastics, and citizens of all classes. It was a very important reference for artists of historic paintings.Artists and Engravers: The author of this work is Georges Duplessis (1834-1899). Engravings in this work by A. Didier, Leopold Flameng (Belgian, 1831-1911), Frederic-Auguste Laguillermie (French, 1841-1934), J. Jacquet & J.B. Lallemand after drawings by the famous French architectural historian and interior designer Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard (1825-1902).
Condition: Excellent, given age. Very faint ghosting around the image from framing. A tiny stain in the bottom right margin corner, a thumbstain in the bottom of the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Relevant text sheet included.
