Original crayon drawing, a portrait of Jan Gerrit van Gelder, director of the print room of Museum Boymans in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) at the time of depiction.
Crayon on wove paper.
Sheet size: 31,8 x 40,3 cm. Image size: 31 x 33 cm.
According to a note from the collector who purchased this drawing in 1985, it was acquired from P.H. Jansen in Nijmegen, who bought the portrait and a number of prints (of presumably the etching that was made after this drawing) from the widow of the artist. Provenance: From a private collection. Acquired from the widow of the artist by P.H. Jansen (Nijmegen, The Netherlands).
Made by ‘Alfred Löb’ after own design. Alfred Löb (also Loeb, Elbersfeld, 1883-1959, The Hague) was a painter, draughtsman and graphic artist. He was born in Elberfeld near Wuppertal, but was active in the Netherlands from 1922 onward. He was deported to Theresienstadt around 1943 but survived and returned to the Netherlands after the war.
Condition: Good, given age. Scattered small stains in the margins and around the image. Only a few small stains in the image itself. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
