Description

Album.

Pen and ink, gouache and watercolour drawing with gold paint accents on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 18,5 x 25 cm. Image size: 16 x 14 cm.

From an Album belonging to ‘Elise’ (Elisabeth Maria Adriana de Vois / Voys (1853-1919), daughter of Elisabeth Maria Theodora de Vois / Voys (1830- ) and Adrianus Hermanus Petrus Eleonardus Sterck (c.1824-1859), a Dutch merchant and aristocrat.

Below the minaiature in the letter A the following inatials and dating can be read: A.M.H.S. 1874. We have strong reference though that this page was drawn by Adrianus Slits for A.M.H. Sterck. We hve not been able yet to determine yet who A.M.H. Sterck was. Possibly this was Andreas Maria Sterck, Elise’s brother Andreas (1857-1859) who died at a young age. At top right in pencil: ‘van E.M.H. Sterck’ (= Elise).

Gerard Slits (1829-1888) was a Dutch priest, versatil artist and art teacher at the famous Rolduc seminary, where several of pieces can still be found. You can find information about him at www.rolduc.org/Diversen/

Condition: Very good, given age. Some light foxing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
