Manuscript – Miniature drawing related to Rolduc.

Pen and ink, gouache and watercolour drawing with gold paint accents on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 25 x 18,5 cm. Image size: 16,3 x 11,5 cm.

From an Album belonging to ‘Elise’ (Elisabeth Maria Adriana de Vois / Voys, daughter of Elisabeth Maria Theodora de Vois / Voys (1830- ) and Adrianus Hermanus Petrus Eleonardus Sterck (c.1824-1859), a Dutch merchant and aristocrat.

Dated 1877. This is a 19th. c. interpretation of a Book of Hours page with delicate real-like miniatures. Very well executed. Willem van Hildegaertsbergh was a late 14th. c. Dutch Poet.

Made by Gerard Slits (monogram GS below miature at left bottom) possibly for W.E. (Dr. Willem Everts) as contribution to the Album Amicorum of ‘Elise’.

Gerard Slits (1829-1888) was a Dutch priest, versatil artist and art teacher at the famous Rolduc seminary, where several of pieces can still be found. You can find information about him at www.rolduc.org/Diversen/

Dr. Willem Everts was a Dutch Priest, teacher and politician. He represented the district of Roermond. He was educated at the Rolduc seminary and was the director of Rolduc from 1868-1893. He played an important role in the development of Rolduc as a Catholic Seminary / School.

Condition: Very good, given age. Some light foxing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
