A Batuan ink-washed painting from the Indonesian island Bali. This painting depicts a demon jumping from a coconut palm with a whip in its hand, to terrify the villagers below.

Ink and wash on wove paper.
Sheet size: 27,4 x 37,5 cm. Image size: 22,7 x 32,2 cm.

Signed in the lower right corner of the image. Provenance: From a private collection, further provenance unknown.

Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Dewa Made Kundel’. I Dewa Made Kundel (1926-, also Dewa Putu Kundel) is an Indonesian artist from the Jero Kajanan Ksatria group, of which Kundel’s brothers were also members.

Condition: Very good, given age. Some creasing of the sheet. Remains of attachment to matting in the lower margin. The margins a little soiled. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
