– A dramatic depiction of a lion under siege by a pack of hounds. The lion stands upright, fending off multiple attackers, baring its teeth, while several dogs leap or lie around him. The scene is full of dynamic movement and tension. IDEM FOR Deer, boar and bear hunt.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published by Cornelis Galle (1576-1650) in Antwerp, c. 1645.

State: Series of 4 hunting scenes with dogs.

Reference: Hollstein Dutch 95; Rijksmuseum, object RP-P-1904-742.

Biography engraver: Lucas Emil I Vorsterman (1595-1675) was a Dutch engraver from Zaltbommel. From 1618 to 1622, he collaborated with Peter Paul Rubens.

Biography artist: Peeter Boel (1622-1674) was a Flemish painter and print designer, celebrated for his detailed and naturalistic depictions of animals and hunting scenes.
