Indien Dansant. Chef des Renards. Chef Mandan. Indiens Corbeaux. – Set of four handcoloured plates showing North American natives. The first shows a dancing native in ceremonial costume. The second shows a seated chief, with his son at his feet, of the Algonquin-speaking Meskwaki tribe. The third shows a Mandan chief, a Great Plains tribe form North Dokato. The final plate shows warriors from the Crow Tribe (or Apsaalooke).

Handcoloured lithograph, heightened with Arabic gum on wove (vellin) paper.
Sheet size: 16,7 x 26,1 cm. (6,6 x 10,3 inch). Image size: 10 x 18 cm. (3,9 x 7,1 inch).

From the Africa/America volume of “Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples de Monde” by Auguste Wahlen. This was published in Paris: Poiree, Pilout, Duterte and Martinon, 1844.

Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Auguste Wahlen’. Author: Auguste Wahlen. Various artists are responsible for the illustrations, most notably Evrard Duverger, L. Markaert and R. King.

Condition: Good, given age. Faintly browned, and with a few small stains. A dark stain in the top margin of one, a similar stain in the lower left margin of the dancing native. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
