Biography engraver: Paul Pontius (1603–1658) was a Flemish engraver from Antwerp and one of the foremost reproductive printmakers of the 17th century. A collaborator of Rubens and Van Dyck, he became renowned for his technically brilliant burin engravings, particularly the portraits after Van Dyck’s Iconographie.
Biography artist: Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) was a Flemish Baroque painter and draughtsman, celebrated as one of Europe’s greatest portraitists. After training with Rubens, he became court painter to Charles I of England. His portrait prints and paintings profoundly influenced European aristocratic portraiture.
