– Portrait of the German physician and scholar Johann Albrecht Gesner shown seated half-length within a trompe-l’oeil frame. He wears an elegant eighteenth-century coat and wig and rests one hand on a book, with a draped curtain and architectural background behind him. A heraldic coat of arms and Latin inscription appear below the portrait. Johann Albrecht Gesner (1694-1761) was a German physician, naturalist, and academic figure. He served as physician and councillor to the Duke of Wurttemberg and held positions as archiater (chief physician). Gesner was associated with early scientific and medical institutions and became a member of learned academies including the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. His career reflects the close connection between medicine, natural science, and court service in eighteenth-century Europe.
