– Portrait of the German physician and professor Georg Gottlob Richter shown half-length within an architectural frame. The sitter wears an elegant eighteenth-century coat and wig and rests his hand on a large book placed on a pedestal, with drapery and a bookcase in the background. A heraldic medallion decorates the upper frame while a Latin inscription panel appears below the portrait. Georg Gottlob Richter (4 February 1694, Schneeberg – 28 May 1773, Gottingen) was a German physician and professor of medicine. He studied philosophy and medicine in Leipzig, Wurzburg, Kiel, and Leiden, receiving his doctorate in Kiel in 1720. Richter later served as assessor of the medical faculty in Kiel and became court physician and councillor to the Prince-Bishop of Lubeck in Eutin. In 1736 he was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Gottingen by George II, Elector of Brunswick-Luneburg and King of Great Britain, and served as royal physician and court councillor. Richter became an important member of the early Gottingen academic community and belonged to several learned societies.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) was a German engraver, mezzotint specialist, publisher, and art dealer active in Augsburg. He was among the most important German practitioners of mezzotint in the eighteenth century. Haid produced numerous portraits of European nobility, scholars, clergy, and officials, often after paintings by contemporary artists. Through his publishing house he distributed portrait prints widely across the German states, contributing significantly to the popularity of mezzotint portraiture in Central Europe.

Biography artist: Georg Daniel Heumann (1691-1759) was a German painter, engraver, and draftsman active in Nuremberg. He produced numerous portrait drawings and engravings of scholars, clergy, and notable figures of the eighteenth century. His portraits were frequently used as models for engraved reproductions by other artists, including mezzotints produced by Johann Jakob Haid in Augsburg.
