– Half-length portrait of the Dutch painter Adriaen van de Venne seated behind a parapet, turned slightly to the right while facing the viewer. His right hand rests on a sheet of paper while the other gestures outward. Behind him appear scholarly attributes including a bust sculpture and an open illustrated book on a table, while a curtain hangs above and a church tower is visible through a window in the background. The print reproduces a self-portrait by the artist and was etched by Wenceslaus Hollar. Adriaen van de Venne (1589-1662) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, draughtsman, and poet known for allegorical and satirical scenes as well as political imagery connected to the Dutch Republic. His works often combine moralizing themes with lively narrative detail.

Published by Johannes Meyssens, Antwerp; etched by Wenceslaus Hollar after a self-portrait by Adriaen van de Venne, 1649.

Biography engraver: Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) was a Bohemian-born etcher and printmaker who spent much of his career in England. One of the most prolific graphic artists of the seventeenth century, he produced thousands of etchings depicting portraits, city views, costumes, landscapes, and historical scenes. His precise line and delicate tonal work made him one of the most respected printmakers of the Baroque period.

Biography artist: Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne (1589-1662) was a Dutch Golden Age painter, draughtsman, and poet active in The Hague. He produced allegorical scenes, political satire, landscapes, and book illustrations, often related to contemporary events in the Dutch Republic. Van de Venne also worked closely with publishers and poets and contributed illustrations to numerous emblem books and literary publications.
