BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Portrait engraving of Joost van den Vondel by Cornelis Visscher, Netherlands, second quarter of the 17th century. Originally engraved in 1657.

Reference: Hollstein 164 vi/vi.

Provenance: Dr. W.G. in ring (not in Lugt).

Biography engraver: Cornelis II Visscher (1619-1662) was one of the most accomplished Dutch engravers of the seventeenth century. Active in Amsterdam, he produced refined portrait engravings and genre scenes distinguished by their subtle tonal effects and meticulous line work. His portraits after life became highly sought after and were widely circulated in portrait collections.
