‘OMNIBUS.’ / ‘J. VONDELIUS.’ / ‘OLOR BATAVUS.”

– Portrait bust of the celebrated Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel shown in profile facing right, placed on a pedestal within an arched niche. Behind the bust appears a lyre, symbolizing poetry, while on the base a swan is depicted with the inscription ‘Olor Batavus’ (‘The Dutch Swan’), a poetic emblem often associated with Vondel. The refined stipple engraving technique creates a sculptural modeling of the head and gives the portrait a soft tonal effect. The print was executed by the Amsterdam sculptor and engraver Johannes Lutma II using the hammer technique (‘opus mallei’), reflecting his background as a medalist and metalworker.
