BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Published January 1777; after a drawing in the collection of the Earl of Bute.

Biography engraver: Captain William Baillie (1723-1810) was a Scottish soldier and amateur printmaker known for his engravings after Old Master drawings and paintings. He produced a number of reproductive prints in the later 18th century, often after works in British collections.
Biography artist: Frans van Mieris the Elder (1635-1681) was a Dutch Golden Age painter from Leiden, renowned for his finely executed genre scenes and portraits. A pupil of Gerrit Dou, he became one of the leading fijnschilders (fine painters) of the 17th century.
