– A finely detailed etching by Herman Swanevelt depicting an idealized classical landscape with an ancient sarcophagus elevated on a stone platform. The intricately decorated sarcophagus is adorned with relief figures, evoking classical antiquity. In the foreground, figures dressed in antique garments are seen engaging in conversation and contemplation, while others pass by, enhancing the scene’s narrative depth. The composition is framed by lush foliage and rolling hills, creating a harmonious balance between nature and architecture. This print reflects the 17th-century fascination with antiquity and classical ruins. Originally sold by Pierre Mariette in Paris, as indicated by an erased inscription. Biography engraver: Herman Swanevelt (1600-1655) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker known for his idyllic Italianate landscapes. He worked in Rome and later in Paris, where he influenced the development of landscape painting with his atmospheric compositions.
