BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Original antique master print. Our definition of a Master Print is a seperately published print or series of prints, not being an illustrative print to a text. These can both be prints made by old masters (artists) or prints made by others (artists, engravers, etchers) after old masters. Engraved by Kaiser after a painting by Israels, in c.1870. .
Biography engraver: Johann Wilhelm (Jan Willem) Kaiser (1813-1900) was a Dutch artist and engraver. Little is known of his works but book illustrations. He is, however, known in the philatelic world as the designer of the first Dutch stamp, as well as other early stamps.
Biography artist: Jozef Israels (1824-1911) was a Dutch painter, seen as the ‘most respectable artist’ of the second half of the 19th century.
