Antique print, titled: ‘Hudibras and the Lawyer’, William Hogarth here depicts Hudibras’s visit to a lawyer who encourages the knight to write a letter to the woman he is courting. Just as Hudibras is a play on the popular figure of the “heroic knight,” Samuel Butler used his past experience in law to satirize the lawyer. Plate 7 from Hudibras, published in the Heath edition of 1822.Artists and Engravers: Made by T. Cook after W. Hogarth. Thomas Cook (1744-1818) was a London engraver. Thomas was a student of Ravenet, the well-known French engraver who resided in London at the time. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English painter, printmaker, social critic and cartoonist.
