Antique print, titled: ‘Hudibras and the Lawyer’, William Hogarth here depicts Hudibras’s visit to a lawyer who encourages the knight to write a letter to the woman he is courting. Just as Hudibras is a play on the popular figure of the “heroic knight,” Samuel Butler used his past experience in law to satirize the lawyer. Plate 7 from Hudibras, published in the Heath edition of 1822.Artists and Engravers: Made by T. Cook after W. Hogarth. Thomas Cook (1744-1818) was a London engraver. Thomas was a student of Ravenet, the well-known French engraver who resided in London at the time. He has copied the entire engraved work of Hogarth, which was published under the name ‘Hogarth Restored’ from 1806. William Hogarth (1697-1764) was an English painter, printmaker, social critic and cartoonist.
Condition: Very good, given age. Ghosting from previous matting around the image. Slight paper erosion on the platemark. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
