He was Bishop of Passau and Strasbourg (until 1625) and Archduke of Further Austria including Tirol. This original antique engraving originates from: ‘Belgica : l’histoire des Pays-bas d’Emanuel de Meteren : ou, Recueil des guerres, et choses memorables advenues tant es dits pays, qu’es pays voysins, depuis l’an 1315 iusques a l’an 1612 published in The Hague by Hellebrant Jacobz Wou, 1618. Text on verso.Artists and Engravers: Emanuel van Meteren or Meteeren (1535-1612) was a Flemish historian and Consul for ‘the Traders of the Low Countries’ in London. As a historian Van Meteren was special in that he was not merely a chronicler of the events of his time, but also a powerful and wealthy man who influenced those events. ‘The first edition of his ‘Historia Belgica’ was published in Latin, at Amsterdam, in 1597. A continuation was written up to the date of Meteren’s death, and a French version came out at the Hague in 1618. Meteren is the author whose evidence is most important for establishing the innocence of Anne Boleyn.
