Text on verso.Artists and Engravers: Emanuel van Meteren or Meteeren (1535-1612) was a Flemish historian and Consul for ‘the Traders of the Low Countries’ in London. As a historian Van Meteren was special in that he was not merely a chronicler of the events of his time, but also a powerful and wealthy man who influenced those events. ‘The first edition of his ‘Historia Belgica’ was published in Latin, at Amsterdam, in 1597. A continuation was written up to the date of Meteren’s death, and a French version came out at the Hague in 1618.
