Description

Subject: Plate: ‘Platte Grond van de Stadt Breda.’ (View of Breda, The Netherlands). With extensive key and dual coat of arms of Brabant and Breda. Very rare.

Condition: Excellent given age. Original middle fold. General age related toning. Small tear in the top and bottom margin of the middle fold, not affecting image. Small unobtrusive hole in the left of the image. Please study scan carefully.

Medium: Copperplate engraving on a verge type of hand laid paper.

Size (in cm): The overall size is ca. 64.5 x 54 cm. The image size is ca. 51 x 41 cm.

Size (in inch): The overall size is ca. 25.4 x 21.3 inch. The image size is ca. 20.1 x 16.1 inch.

Description: Published in amsterdam by Covens and Mortier, ca. 1748. From a very scarse Atlas with few copies published. This map is an original Covens Mortier map, not a re-issue or copy from earlier sources.

Artists and Engravers: Pieter und David Mortier were booksellers in Paris and have published a wide range of geographical works. After Pieter’s death, his widow continued the business until their son Cornelius took over. Cornelius started a partnership with his brother-in-law Johannes Covens and established the famous publishing house “Covens and Mortier” in Amsterdam. They have re-issued Atlases of Sanson, de l’Isle, Visscher and de Wit.
