De Rievier van Suratta. – This scarce original antique navigational chart shows the Suratte River. Suratte or Soeratte was a famous trading city on the north coast of what is now India, in the modern state of Gujarat, lying on the river Tapti. With compass rose, scale and rhumb lines.

Sheet size: 38 x 31,5 cm. Image size: 37,3 x 29,2 cm.

From the monumental work by François Valentyn: “Oud en nieuw Oost-Indiën, vervattende een naaukeurige en uitvoerige verhandelinge van Nederlands mogentheyd in die gewesten”. Dordrecht/Amsterdam: J. van Braam en G. onder de Linden, 1724/1726. (Transl.: Old and new East-Indies, including an accurate and extensive description of Dutch / VOC controlled territories.)

Made by an anonymous engraver after Francois Valentijn / VOC sources.

Condition: Very good, given age. A few small spots. Original middle fold as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
