Description
Christ is guarding the correct entry door for the flock / true believers / sheep to enter the stable (based on John 10:1), while church clerics including monks, a cardinal, bisshop and even the pope seek other entrances and mislead the flock. The print, published as a broadside can be seen as reformation criticism on the catholic church.
Originally attributed to Bartel Beham but currently attributed to an unknown artist depicted by ‘monogrammist M.S.’, first published in c. 1545. This is a later impression.
Woodcut on wove paper with vague vertical chainlines.
