Antique print, titled: ‘Woerben’ – An old plan of the Dutch city Woerden. Very rare. “Hollandischer Mercurius …”, Frankfurt: J.W. Ammon & W.Serlin, 1672. The illustrations in this particular work are woodcuts after the etchings of Matthaus Merian.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Matthaus Merian’. Matthaus Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was born in Basel. He studied drawing and copper engraving from the engraver Friedrich Meyer in Zurich. 1619 he went to Frankfurt where he worked for the publisher Johann Theodor de Bry, whose daughter he married. He took over and completed the editions of “Grand Voyages” and “Petit Voyages” which de Bry started in 1590. Together with Martin Zeiller he produced the popular series of “Topographia” with total 21 volumes. The work was continued by his sons Matthaus the Younger and Caspar.
Condition: Fair, given age. Original fold in the lower edge of the image. Two spots of paper damage in the right edge, backed with contemporary paper and acid-free archival tape. A cut in the lower left margin, similarly treated. A stain in the lower edge of the image and some staining in the right part. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
