Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 24 x 17 cm (9.45 x 6.69 inch). Image size: 16 x 12.5 cm. (6.3 x 4.92 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light soiling and foxing. Top remargined, not effecting the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published by Jollain. Also spelled Jolin and Iollain, Jollain was the name of a family of French engravers and engraving publishers who lived and worked in the 17th and 18th centuries, mainly in Paris. Their engravings were often published under the name Chez Jollain (English: House of Jollain). The atelier Jollain was responsible for the first engraving of harpsichord music in France.

Biography engraver: Gerard Jollain (active 1660-1683) was a French copper engraver, active in Paris under the sign of ‘Ville de Cologne’.

Biography artist: Antonio Tempesta, also called il Tempestino (1555-1630), was an Italian painter and engraver, whose art acted as a point of connection between Baroque Rome and the culture of Antwerp. Much of his work depicts major battles and historical figures.
