Sheet size: 34 x 22,5 cm. (13,4 x 8,9 inch). Image size: 30,9 x 19,5 cm. (12,2 x 7,7 inch).

From: ‘Liber artificiosus alphabeti maioris, oder: neu inventirtes Kunst- Schreib- und Zeichenbuch’, by Johann Merken, published in Muhlheim am Rhein, 1782-1785. This was a richly illustrated artist’s manual and typography guide with a rich assortment of subjects for the aspiring draftsman and calligrapher.

Made by ‘Heinrich Hugo Cöntgen’ after ‘Johann Merken’. Heinrich Hugo Cöntgen / Coentgen (1727-1792) was a German engraver from Mainz. He was the father of the painter and engraver Georg Joseph Cöntgen (1752-1799).

Condition: Good, given age. Overall creasing. Light soiling. Worm hole at left middle, backed. Some tiny worm holes. Tear at bottom middle, backed. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
