Biography engraver: Richard Houston (1721-1775) was a prominent Irish mezzotint engraver active in London. Known for translating paintings by artists such as Reynolds, Van Dyck, and Mercier into richly tonal mezzotints, often published by Robert Sayer.
Biography artist: Philip Mercier (1689-1760) was a German-born painter who became active in England, where he gained fame for his portraits and genre scenes, often with Rococo and sentimental themes. A forerunner of the English conversation piece.
