Published by Johann Ulrich Kraus (1655-1719), who was a german illustrator, engraver and publisher in Augsburg. Provenance: Ex. Coll. Georg Denzel (1873-1959 and Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Denzel (collection mark: G+W D in circle; not in Lugt), father and son collectors from Munich. Additional collection mark: AR in cirble = A. Riedinger (Lugt 167).
Made by ‘Jean le Pautre’ after own design. Jean le Pautre / Lepautre / Le Potre / Lepotre (1618-1682) was a French designer and engraver. Le Pautre was an apprentice to a carpenter and builder. In addition to learning mechanical and constructive work, he developed considerable skill with the pencil. His designs, innumerable in quantity and exuberant in content, consisted mainly of ceilings, friezes, chimney-pieces, doorways and mural decorations. He also devised fire-dogs, sideboards, cabinets, console tables, mirrors and other pieces of furniture.
Condition: Good, given age. Trimmed inside plate marks and attached to carrier. Light staining an soiling, Remains of paper tape on rear from attachment. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
