BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Biography engraver: Simon Wynouts Frisius (ca. 1580-1628) was a Dutch engraver, etcher, draughtsman and calligrapher, born in Harlingen. He spent a few years in Paris but returned to the Netherlands, where he would spend his final days in The Hague.

Matthijs Bril or Matthijs Bril the Younger (1550, Antwerp-1583, Rome) was a Flemish painter specialised in landscapes. He spent most of his active career in Rome (from c. 1575) where he introduced the northern style of landscape painting. He was the son of the painter Matthijs Bril the Elder (Breda- died c. 1550, Antwerp).[2] and elder brother of Paul Bril.
